DEPI Grampians Region
The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) Grampians Region stretches from Bacchus Marsh in the south, to Horsham and Hopetoun in the north, Edenhope and the Big Desert in the west and east to St Arnaud and Daylesford.
The DEPI Grampians Region covers about 48,000 square kilometres, with a population of around 216,000 people. Major centres are Ballarat (98,000) Horsham (14,000) and Bacchus Marsh (13,500). Landscapes range from deserts in the north to irrigation properties along the Lerderderg River on Melbourne’s fringe. It hosts the Grampians and Pyrenees Ranges, Little Desert National Park and extensive West Wimmera wetlands region. Grampians Food and fibre producers produce 45 per cent of Victoria’s wheat and 85 per cent of Victoria’s pulses. The region hosts about one third of the state’s sheep and also produces wool, meat, vegetables and grapes. Our staff are involved in grains research, as well working on management of fire, biodiversity, animal health and pest plant and animals control and in helping to ensure sustainable landscapes.
